A brief history of starting out…

There’s a few places where you can read my published works. I’ll keep those updated on the Stories page. But to begin, I thought I’d offer a little backstory on the first couple of things I wrote…

My first published story is in Horror Bites, Issue #2 and it’s called “Chompy”. It’s one of the earliest stories I wrote with the intent to try and publish, and it went through many revisions before Kelby Barker published it in his fledgling magazine. He still needs your support to help him showcase new horror authors, so pick up the magazine and perhaps a few more that’ve come out since then!

While “Chompy” was published first, my first story to be accepted was in STORGY.com‘s 2017 contest, Exit Earth. My story, “Crow Rides a Pale Horse” made it to the shortlist, and as a result was published with the contest winners and other finalists. There’s also a few reprints from some well-known authors, like M.R. Carey (The Girl with All the Gifts) and Courttia Newland. It’s STORGY’s first book, so do them a solid and pick up a hard copy for yourself. They do great work for their authors, working their butts off around-the-clock, so it should be a no-brainer!

I’ve also got a few “drabbles” (100-word stories) and a flash piece up at Horror Tree’s Trembling with Fear page. Horror Tree has been instrumental in helping me find new markets, and supporting me by publishing my writing more than once! They’ve got a Patreon you can support, which might help you if you’re a writer, or me and lots of other new people working hard to break out.

Getting the drabbles published actually inspired me to set up my own Tumblr a decade after they were popular, where I try (and often fail) to publish a very short story once a week. If you’re looking for just a small piece of fiction to bite off, you could always keep that page bookmarked…

I’ve got a couple new stories coming out in the next few months, so keep an eye out here or follow me on Twitter (@erikbbergstrom).

That’s all for now.
